Find out where heat is leaking

An infra-red camera records images of the temperature variations of a building’s roof and exterior walls, ranging from white for warm areas to black for the coolest. These can help to determine whether insulation is needed, or can serve as a quality control tool, to ensure that insulation has been installed correctly. It can also show heat leaking around doors and windows.

The survey can be done from outside or inside, or both – it’s your choice. Interior scans are more effective, because warm air escaping from a building does not always move through the walls in a straight line. Heat loss detected in one area of the outside wall might originate at some other location on the inside. Also, it is harder to detect temperature differences on the outside surface of the building during windy weather; interior surveys are generally more accurate because there is less air movement.

Tatham Parish Council Carbon Committee has secured the loan of an infra-red camera from February 16-25th, and surveys are available free to anyone who would like one. We will email you the images for you to keep. We hope to do most in the evenings, from 7.30pm, but might be able to arrange a daytime survey if needed. Please phone Anne or Richard Wilson 015242 63399 with your preferred dates/times, or you can get in touch by email.
